"Build Your Heart, Not Barns"

"And He said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness;
for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he posseseth."  ~ Luke 12:15

        The crowd Jesus was speaking to were people that focused on the material and not on the spiritual. The thought here deals with the matter of covetousness. It goes back to verse 13, "... speak to my brother that he divide inheritance with me." They desired to get their hands on what they had not worked for.
      To "covet" means that you are not content. This is what led this man to build greater barns. We see several mistakes in this man's decision. First, he acted on personal opinion, ".. he thought within himself," (verse 17). Most people do the same today. Next, he believed he had a tomorrow, "..this will I do." (verse 18). He planned a future based upon his own ability. Thirdly, he decided to relax and take it easy; "Souls - take thine ease." (verse 19) He believed what he had accumulated would always be there, so he just floated and flaunted his comfortable position. Last of all, he ignored final accountability; "..thou fool, this day, thou soul shall be required of thee." (verse 20) Thus, everyone must give an account to God: both the saved and the lost!
       May we strive to build up out hearts and not "barns". Jesus said, "So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God." ~ Luke 12:21
